Abstract
Background: The sciences of ?ab? and i?r?b safeguard the accuracy of Qur?anic recitation and meaning, yet previous studies have treated them separately, focusing either on mu??af notation or on grammatical theory, without examining their integration within qir???t or their relevance to social life.
Objective: This study aims to analyse the concept and historical development of ?ab? and i?r?b, their relationship within the science of qir???t, and the social values that can be derived from them.
Method: This library research employed a descriptive-analytical design with qualitative content and comparative analysis of classical works, including al-D?n?'s al-Mu?kam f? Naq? al-Ma???if, Ab? D?w?d's U??l al-?ab?, and major na?w works, supported by contemporary studies.
Results: ?ab? preserves the phonetic accuracy of each riw?yah, whereas i?r?b preserves syntactic structure and meaning. Their interdependence is illustrated by QS. F??ir [35]: 28, where reversing the case endings of All?h and al-?ulam?? inverts the meaning. The study also distinguishes valid mutaw?tir variants, such as M?liki/Maliki, from reading errors (la?n). Socially, both sciences represent tabayyun, proportional justice, discipline, and a balance between adaptation and integrity.
Conclusion: Integrating ?ab? and i?r?b preserves the authenticity of recitation and provides a linguistic basis for Qur?anic social ethics.
